Tricks of the Shaytaan

As Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) has told us Shaitan is our enemy:

Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy. He only invites his party to be among the companions of the Blaze.[36:6]

Therefore we should always be on guard because he is doing everything he can to lead us astray.
Below is some of the ways Shaitan tries to trick us:

He pretends he wants good for you – When he wants you to do a Haraam act, he will will not say to you ‘do this bad act so we can go to hell together’ or ‘do this so Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) will be angry with you’. No, he is way more smarter than that!

And he swore [by Allah] to them, “Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors.” [7:21]

O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise…[7:27]

He makes use of his allies amongst the children of Adam – As Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) tells us in the Quran:

And indeed do the devils inspire their allies [among men] to dispute with you….[6:121]

This is why sometimes you will see somebody, that on the outside, looks to be doing you good such as giving you advice, money, friendship etc. But with all that seeming good stuff he is teaching you Haraam and bad habits and it is one of the reasons to stay away from bad people.

Ignorance – The biggest ignorance that the human being can fall into is to be ignorant of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) who has created you and the Aakhirah that is waiting for all of us. The person should understand the true meaning of this world and that we were not created just to play and have fun but in fact it is for the worship of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He).

And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play.[44:38-39]

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. [51:56]

The shaitaan hates a person who has knowledge because it is very difficult to trick him. Even if he tricks him once the knowledgeable person will make Tawbah and seek the forgiveness of Allah but the ignorant one will continue doing something bad while thinking it is good.

Anger – When a person gets angry, he will do things without thinking about them that he would otherwise not do.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him):
“A man said to the Prophet, ‘Give me advice.’ The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, ‘Do not get angry.’ The man asked repeatedly and the Prophet answered each time, ‘Do not get angry.’”

Love of the Dunya (worldly life) – With our quest for wealth, fame, honour, women etc we can fall into many Haraam things.

Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire – of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return. [3:14]

Making the person think he has a long life – Shaytaan makes the person forget about the Aakhirah and that he can die anytime. We all think we are going to live a long time and even if we won’t admit it our actions say otherwise.

Above are some of the ways the shaytaan can trick a person and we should always be on our guard against him.
