The Importance of Time

This article will cover a subject that every Mu’min, every Mu’minah, every Muslim and every Muslimah is in great need of knowing it and that is time and its importance.

Time is a chance and a great blessing that Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) has given to all of us.  In the Quran, Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) swears by time in many different places (Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) can swear by whatever he wishes, but we can only swear by Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) ).

This shows that time is very important and the Muslim person should take advantage of his time in this world.  If we do not take advantage of the minutes, hours and days that Allah has given us to prepare for the hereafter then we are indeed in great loss.

Most of us waste our times on the most useless of things that don’t benefit us at all.  We do this whether we are young, middle aged, old, male or female. Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) says:

Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned? [23:115]

Of course not. Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) says:

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. [51:56]

To worship Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) is the reason we have been created and the reason Allah has blessed us with time, So shouldn’t we take advantage of this by being engaged in Salat, Fasting, Qiyaamu-layl, doing Tasbeeh, giving in charity, visiting the sick and all the other worship acts that will benefit us.

Our time and the lifespan is a chance that Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) will ask us about on the day of judgement as the prophet (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) told us in a Hadith. We will be asked how we spent our lives and about our wealth, from where we got it and how we spent it.

The prophet (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) also told us about two blessings that most people are heedless of; good health and free time. The Person who has been given this is like he has been given the whole world and he should take advantage of this health and free time by thanking Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)), fearing Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) and worshiping Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)).

The earlier Muslims used to take advantage of their time, even if they had a short lifespan such as Imam Nawawi (raḥimahullāh (may Allāh have mercy upon him)) who lived for only 43 years, but we all know the fast knowledge he has left for the Muslims and how we have all benefited from his work.  Works such as his 40 Hadith, Riyadu Saliheen and the sharh of Sahih Muslim.  He was able to do this by taking advantage of his time and because he had Ikhlas.  If the person accompanies his actions with Ikhlas no matter how small the action Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) gives it Barakah.

Each and every one of us should have a program or a timetable that he has created for himself and after waking up from sleep in the morning and praying the Fajr prayer, we should look at it and reflect on the past day and the one to come and ask ourselves about the best way we can take advantage of our time.

Unfortunately, most of us don’t do this but instead we waste our time on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram and so on.  These websites and apps are not a bad thing by themselves, it all depends on how they are used.  If one uses them correctly to spread the Deen of Islam then that is a good thing but if it is just for entertainment then we have wasting our time and committing sins.

The Person who really takes advantage of his time and worships Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) is indeed successful in this world and in the aakhirah. If the people who have died and are in the graves were to be asked right now, what is the one thing they would like to have, they would ask to be brought back to this dunya even if it is just for a second so that they can have a chance to say Allahu akbar or Subhanallah just once or make one sujood to Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)).

So, before it is too late, take advantage of your time.
